Introduction to Mendoza

Mendoza, Argentina is an alluring city set at the foot of the western stretch of the Andes and backed by breathtaking mountainous landscapes. After the city was ruined in the 1861 earthquake, it was relocated to the southwest of its original site. Even though this natural disaster destroyed much of the colonial architecture and historical monuments, Mendoza has developed remarkably from its rocky past to become one of the most reputable and important cities in Argentina. Today it is home to over one million inhabitants, many beautiful parks and a colourful social scene.

If you are planning a trip to this bustling city, the most rewarding thing you can do is follow the Mendocinos in their chilled out way of life and observe and enjoy the daily comings and goings from one of the stunning parks. Most locals carry out their daily exchanges in the parks and there is always plenty going on. A particular favourite is Parque General San Martín, which benefits from a rowing lake and the natural science and anthropology museum (San Juan Corelio Moyano). There are also lots of exquisitely maintained plazas to wile away your time in, from the tree lined Plaza Independencia to the multicoloured Plaza España.

Mendoza's wine is probably what the region is most famous for, and win-o's will be in their element with the enormous selection of bodegas and vineyards just waiting to be visited. There is also ample opportunitiy to venture out in to the Andes and make the most of the high class mountain climbing and trekking.
